The Literacy Program vision is that 95% of all children in Southern California will read in English at grade level by the age on nine.

The Los Angeles Times has partnered with business, civic, education, government, media and philanthropic organizations to support child litracy initiatives. Readying by 9 partners support public awareness campaigns and information referral resources, hold book drives to collect children’s books, donate new books, sponsor summer reading programs at public libraries, recruit train and place volunteers in elementary schools, sponsor literacy leadership training for elementary school principals, and more.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL & THE ANAHEIM HILLS ROTARY CLUB has partnered with the Los Angeles Times in this endeavor. Last year, AHRC contributed over 350 new books to three elementary schools in our community. During the past 5 years, AHRC has delivered books to more than 8 different elementary schools here in Anaheim Hills.

No skill is more critical to the future of a child, or the future of a democratic prosperous society, than literacy.

In Southern California, four out of five third graders cannot read at grade level. Research shows that children who fail to read by the age of nine, rarely catch up later. In many cases, these children may never be able to realize their full potential or contribute and participate fully in our society.

In 1998, The Los Angeles Times launched Reading by 9 in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Vertura Counties. Reading by 9 is a multi-year campaign aimed at helping kindergarten through third grade students read at grade level by the age of nine.
